Method of, and apparatus for, quenching steel workpieces in a liquid bath, especially in an oil bath
Abstract
Abstract When tempering metal parts in a bath which is stirred to increase the cooling effect, such a strong relative motion of the bath with respect to the parts is created during at least the formation phase of a vapor film on the part, that the evacuation of heat out of the parts is effected, in an average, with a thermal flux density of at least 0.75 MW/m<s2>s. This tempering power is maintained until the surface of the larger cross section part has reached the stable temperature of the bubble vaporization; thereafter, the stirring of the bath is slowed down. To implement said method, an installation is used having a bath tank associated to devices for introducing metal parts to be tempered into the bath and for stirring the bath. Nozzles (24) directed against the parts are connected to a pressure tank (18) filled with the bath liquid (2) under the control of valves. When the tank is filled, it is under a gas pressure and it discharges the liquid at a high speed towards the nozzles (24) during a short and controlled period of time (t).
