Abstract 1. A universal digital network for packet-switched data transmission, wherein an item of dialling information (W) input into an original exchange (VStA ) by an original terminal (A) is used to establish a virtual connection which emanates from the original exchange (VStA ), which extends when necessary via one or more than one transit exchange (VStD1 ... VStDn ) and extends to a target exchange (VStB ) to which a target terminal (B) is connected, that an item of information (S) which is to be transmitted is divided into information sections having variable lengths which are not limited by the transmission process and the switching process, characterised in that an information section, in the form of a block comprising a preceding target code sequence (Z) which contains information concerning virtual subsidiary connections (VT ) which may need to be passed through and comprising an end code (E) which is attached to the end of the information section and signals the end thereof, is promptly transmitted via the real subsidiary connection which is established between two exchanges for a relevant current block, that the information sections are matched to a predetermined time raster which can be sub-divided into raster sections, that complete raster sections of a current information section are suppressed when no real line is promptly available, that from the moment at which a real line is available, the remainder of the information section is promptly transmitted at the beginning of a new raster section and that the virtual connections (VV ) is disestablished at the end of the information transmission.
