Abstract

Method and device for stimulating the growth of a culture of microorganisms in a series of growth zones and for extracting the metabolites produced by the culture. The chemical process takes place in a series of vertically stacked conversion zones (eg fermentation) which are subdivided into moving segments. The flow from one zone to another is induced by the force of gravity. Part of the production medium is recirculated to an upper zone, for example the highest zone, and the metabolites are extracted from the zones. Useful metabolites include body fluids such as alkanols from the fermentation of carbohydrates. In the device (10) specially suited to the process: a fermentation tower generally arranged vertically defines a space extending generally vertically containing the vertically arranged zones (15a-15h). A typical area, for example the area (15c) has a floor (65c) having a drainage opening (165c) for the continuous discharge by gravity of the partially converted raw material to the next lower area (15d). Each zone (for example 15c) is subdivided into continuously movable segments by movable partitions (157c) serving to advance the raw material in the zone towards the drainage opening. A recovery means (23) disposed under a drainage opening (165c) continuously recovers part of the partially converted raw material and recirculates it through a recirculation system (20) to the highest zone (15a). The products of the process are extracted by an appropriate means (41) in communication with the lower end of the tower (11).
