Abstract

Abstract Moldable thermoplastic polymer composition having improved low temperature impact resistance comprise a blend of a graft copolymer of a vinyl halide and optionally a comonomer copolymerisable therewith on a polyolefin component and a polymer composition consisting essentially of acrylonitrile, 1,3-butadiene and styrene monomer units (ABS polymer). These compositions have improved flowability, in the molten state and, when molded under conventional temperature and pressure conditions, provide shaped articles having improved low temperature impact resistance, tensile strength, flame retardancy and heat distortion temperature characteristics, and a desirable gloss or sheen finish.

Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim 48 words
A moldable thermoplastic polymer composition comprising a blend of polymers, characterised by comprising a blend of a graft copolymer of a vinyl halide and optionally a comonomer copolymerisable therewith on a polyolefin component and a polymer composition consisting essentially of acrylonitrile, 1,3-butadiene and styrene monomer units (ABS polymer).
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 48 words
A moldable thermoplastic polymer composition comprising a blend of polymers, characterised by comprising a blend of a graft copolymer of a vinyl halide and optionally a comonomer copolymerisable therewith on a polyolefin component and a polymer composition consisting essentially of acrylonitrile, 1,3-butadiene and styrene monomer units (ABS polymer).
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 42 words
A composition according to claim 1 wherein the blend contains at least 50 weight percent of either the graft copolymer or the ABS polymer and a minor weight proportion of the other, said proportions being based on the weight of the blend.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 33 words
A composition according to claim 2 wherein the proportion of the graft copolymer is from 50 to 99 percent by weight and said graft copolymer has been prepared by bulk liquid phase polymerization.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 23 words
A composition according to claim 3 wherein the graft copolymer is present in a proportion of from 60 to 95 percent by weight.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 32 words
A composition according to claim 2 wherein the proportion of ABS polymer is from 50 to 95 percent by weight and said graft copolymer has been prepared by bulk liquid phase polymerization.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 20 words
A composition according to claim 5 wherein the proportion of ABS polymer is from 50 to 80 percent by weight.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 98 words
A composition according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the polyolefin component of the graft copolymer has a weight average molecular weight of between 50,000 and 1,000,000, and is selected from: a) a homopolymer of an aliphatic hydrocarbon olefin monomer of 2 to 8 carbon atoms. b) a copolymer of two or more of said olefin monomers, and c) a polymer of at least one of said olefin monomers and no more than 15 percent by weight, based on the weight of the polymer, of a non-conjugated aliphatic hydrocarbon polyene of 4 to 18 carbon atoms.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 27 words
A composition according to claim 7 wherein said polyolefin component is selected from an ethylene-propylene copolymer, an ethylene-propylene-diene-modified terpolymer, a propylene homopolymer and a butene-1 ethylene copolymer.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 16 words
A composition according to claim 8 wherein said polyolefin component is an ethylene-propylene ethylidene norbornene terpolymer.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 14 words
Shaped articles of a composition as claimed in any one of the preceding claims.
