Abstract
Abstract A method of vacuum depositing a layer on a plastics film in which the film is transported so as to pass along a metal surface moving with thefilm and deposition is carried out in a manner that a vapour of a source material is emitted to the portion ofthefilm in contact with the metal surface. Thefilm is made to exhibit electret properties when it is located at the metal surface, whereby an electrostatic attractive force exists between the film and the metal surface.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim
96 words
1 . A method for vacuum depositing a layer on a plastics film in which said film is transported so as to pass along a heat conductive surface movable with the film and deposition is carried out in such a manner that a vapour of a source material is emitted to the portion of said film in contact with said heat conductive surface, characterised in that said film is in an electret state when it is located in contact with said heat conductive surface, whereby an electrostatic attractive force exists between said film and said surface.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
96 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
30 words
A method as claimed in claim 1, in which said film is made to exhibit an electret state before it is located in a vacuum chamber for the deposition process.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
26 words
A method as claimed in claim 1, in which said film is made to exhibit an electret state in a vacuum chamber for the deposition process.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
44 words
A method as claimed in claim 3, in which said source material is heated and evaporated by an electron beam bombardment, the energy of said electrons being high enough to cause an electron reflected from said source material to be implanted into the film.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
22 words
A method as claimed in claim 1, in which said heat conductive surface comprises a peripheral surface of a rotatable metal drum.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
21 words
A method as claimed in claim 1, in which said electret state of said film is neutralized after deposition is operated.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
29 words
A method as claimed in claim 6, in which said neutralizing is performed by exposing the surface of the film reverse to the deposited layer to a glow discharge.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
39 words
A method as claimed in claim 1, in which the surface roughness of said heat conductive surface is smaller than 0.1 µ and the surface potential of the film due to the electret state is higher than 150 V.
