A method for displaying the operating parameters of a plurality of parts of a motor vehicle on a viewing screen (14), comprising the steps of (a) constantly monitoring said operating parameters, (b) displaying the magnitudes of said monitored operating parameters as indication items in respective formats on said viewing screen, and (c) detecting when said monitored parameters are abnormal, characterized by the steps (d) of enlarging the displayed item of said detected abnormal parameter in response to the detection of any one of said abnormal parameters by the step (c).

A method for displaying the operating parameters of a plurality of parts of a motor vehicle on a viewing screen (14), comprising the steps of (a) constantly monitoring said operating parameters, (b) displaying the magnitudes of said monitored operating parameters as indication items in respective formats on said viewing screen, and (c) detecting when said monitored parameters are abnormal, characterized by the steps (d) of enlarging the displayed item of said detected abnormal parameter in response to the detection of any one of said abnormal parameters by the step (c).

A method as set forth in claim 1, characterized in that the step (d) comprises causing the enlarged displayed items to be displayed alternately when at least two of said items are detected as being abnormal.

A method as set forth in claim 5, characterized in that said responding step comprises: storing a plurality of digital words in a memory representing different formats respectively for said displayed items; reading one of said digital words out of said memory in response to said manual command signal; and modifying the format of the displayed items in accordance with said format representative digital word read out of said memory.

A device for carrying out the steps set forth in any one of the preceding claims, comprising a display unit (14), means (1--4) for monitoring the operating parameters of various parts of a vehicle and generating display digital word indicative of the magnitudes of the monitored operating parameters, means for generating a format specifying digital word for each of said monitored parameters to cause said display unit to provide said magnitudes on display in a variable format in accordance with said format specifying digital words and detecting when one of said monitored parameters is abnormal, characterized by control means (11) for modifying one of the format specifying digital words associated with the normal parameters to cause the magnitude of the associated normal parameter to be displayed in a modified format to leave a spaced and modifying the format specifying digital word associated with said abnormal parameter to cause the magnitude of the abnormal parameter to be displayed in an enlarged format in an area including said space.

A device as set forth in claim 8, further characterized by means (9; 21,23) for generating a manually responsive command signal for each of said parameters to convert an associated one of the format specifying digital words into a different digital word and causing the displayed magnitude of the parameter associated with said command signal to be displayed in an enlarged format in accordance with said different digital word.
