Abstract

Abstract The invention relates to a process for the preparation of a liquid-absorbing and shock-absorbing material, in which a suspension of fibres consisting wholly or substantially of cellulose is dewatered to a semi-dry mass, which mass is subsequently pelletized, whereupon the resultant pellets are subjected to a drying process, wherein the suspension is a waste sludge derived from a process in which fibres consisting wholly or substantially of cellulose are processed by the wet method, while pelletizing is performed by squeezing the semi-dry mass through one or more narrow apertures, with the pelletizing and the drying conditions adjusted such that the formed pellets have a bulk density not exceeding 400 kg/m<3> and a water content of 0.5 - 10% by weight.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 14
Claim 1
Independent Claim 119 words
A process for the preparation of a liquid-absorbing and shock-absorbing material, in which a suspension of fibres consisting wholly or substantially of cellulose is dewatered to a semi-dry mass, which mass is subsequently pelletized, whereupon the resultant pellets are subjected to a drying process, characterized in that the suspension is a waste sludge derived from a process in which fibres consisting wholly or substantially of cellulose are processed by the wet method, while pelletizing is performed by squeezing the semi-dry mass through one or more narrows apertures, with the pelletizing and the drying conditions adjusted such that the formed pellets have a bulk density not exceeding 400 kg/m 3 and a water content of 0.5 - 10% by weight.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 119 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 40 words
A process according to claim 1, characterized in that the suspension, in terms of its content of dry material, contains 60-80% by weight of fibres, 40-20% by weight of an inorganic filler, and possibly 0-10% by weight of an admixture.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 19 words
A process according to claim 1-2, characterized in that a belt-type filter is used for dewatering of the suspension.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 39 words
A process according to claim 1-3, characterized in that the suspension is dewatered to a point where the semi-dry mass still contains between 40 and 80% by weight and preferably between 55 and 65 % by weight of water.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 32 words
A process according to claim 1-2,characterized in that in the production of the pellets by compression of the semi-dry mass use is made of a rotary pelleting press or a forming extruder.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 63 words
A process according to claim 1-5, characterized in that a small amount, preferably not exceeding 10% by weight, of an admixture such as starch, glue, a dye, an odorant or a biologically active compound such as an insecticide, a fungicide or a bactericide is added to the semi-dry mass before compression into pellets, in order to modify the properties of the formed pellets.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 38 words
A process according to claims 1-2, characterized in that drying of the pellets is done with the aid of a stream of hot air with a temperature between 100 and 150 0 C, preferably between 120 and 130°C.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 22 words
A process according to claim 7, characterized in that the pellets formed are dried to a water content of 5-8% by weight.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 41 words
A process according to claim 1-8, characterized in that the variables of the individual steps are adjusted such that the bulk density of the pellets is between 150 and 400 kg/m 3 , preferably between 200 and 350 kg/m 3 .
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 19 words
Formed pellets with liquid-absorbing and shock-absorbing properties, as obtained according to the process of any one of claims 1-9.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 18 words
Application of the formed pellets according to claim 10 for the removal of oil spills from surface water.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 16 words
Application of the formed pellets according to claim 10 as absorbent for floors and in packaging.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 20 words
Application of the formed pellets according to claim 10 as litter material for domestic pets' excretion boxes and for stables.
