Method of making organic grafts
Abstract
The organ transplants are intended to replace (prostheses) organs or parts of organs that are abnormally or functionally impaired, e.g. Arteries or veins. The organs removed from a fish, bird or higher mammal are subjected to crosslinking of the amino groups or the alcoholic hydroxyl groups of the peptide chains of the intercellular matrix by means of a di-, tri- or polycarboxylic acid. It is advantageous to subsequently treat the crosslinked product with a dialdehyde to bind unreacted amino groups or to free it from potentially antigenically active material by hydrolysis with ficin, papain or a similarly acting protease. After hydrolysis, extensive crosslinking is expediently ensured with a dialdehyde or a di-, tri- or polycarboxylic acid. The prostheses obtained are characterized by chemical stability, biophysical and biochemical properties similar to the native material and the absence of rejection reactions.
