Abstract

Abstract A monitor system for sensing the failure of a rupture disc and activating an alarm in response to such a failure. The system also senses potential failure of a rupture disc. The system includes a failsafe signal carrying loop which is broken when the rupture disc fails, thereby interrupting the signal. The system also includes a signal sensor which recognizes a signal interruption or substantial modification in the signal and initiates and cooperates with an alarm device to provide notice to an operator or a safety device that the rupture disc has failed.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim 145 words
A monitoring system for detecting alterations in a deformable closure disc, said system including a housing (10, 11, 14, 15), a deformable closure disc (12) within said housing providing a fluid seal between isolated portions of said housing, wires or filaments (53) carrying a signal responsive to alterations in said disc, a signal generator (40) for producing a signal in said wires or filaments, and an alarm detector (43) triggered by distortion of said signal carrying wires or filaments, characterized in that the said wires or filaments (53) are in touching relationship with said disc (12) and extend at least partially over the surface thereof in such manner that alteration of the deformable closure disc (12) by pressure change in one of said housing isolated portions will distort said wires or filaments (53) and modify the signal carried thereby to activate said alarm detector (43).
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 145 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 19 words
A monitoring system according to claim 1, characterized in that the wires (53) are part of an electrical circuit.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 19 words
A monitoring system according to claim 1, characterized in that the wires or filaments (53) are light transmitting fibers.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 57 words
A monitoring system according to claim 2 or 3, characterized in that the wires extend across the closure disc (12) in spaced relationship in such manner that stretching of the disc under pressure will alter the spacing between the wires to trigger one signal and rupture of the disc will sever the wires to trigger another signal.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 16 words
A monitoring system according to claim 4, characterized in that the disc (12) is dome shaped.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 27 words
A monitoring system according to claim 5, characterized in that the dome shaped disc (12) nests between a concave retaining section (11) and a convex girdle (14).
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 53 words
A monitoring system according to claim 6, characterized in that the peripheral edges of the dome shaped disc (12), the concave retaining section (11) and the convex girdle (14) are out- turned to define flanges (25, 27, 31) which mate with one another to retain the nested disc section and girdle in position.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 39 words
A monitoring system according to any of claims 4 to 7, characterized in that a knife edge (34) is directed toward the disc and is located to contact said disc upon substantial deformation thereof to assist in said rupture.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 46 words
For use in a monitoring system according to claim 1, a deformable closure disc (12) having signal conveying wires (53) associated therewith, characterized in that said wires (53) are carried by and integral with said disc (12) and extend at least partially over the surface thereof.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 17 words
A deformable closure disc according to claim 9, characterized in that the disc (12) is dome shaped.
