Abstract

Abstract A cardiopulmonary resuscitator (10) comprising a reciprocatable cardiac compressor means (12-19) for cyclically compressing a patient's chest and a ventilating means (26, 27, 96) for inflating the patient's lungs to a benign limiting pressure such as between 10 and 60 cm of water over a period encompassing at least one and preferably three cycles of the compressor means. The resuscitator includes ventilator output control means (45, 51, 54) for (i) preventing retrograde and exhale flow from the patient's lungs during the systolic portion of the cycle of the compressor means thus providing for a pressure increase in the patient's lungs due to compression of the patient's chest to a level well above that of the limiting pressure, for example to between 75 and 200 cm of water, and (ii) periodically venting the patient's lungs, for example for two cycles of the compressor means.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 12
Claim 1
Independent Claim 103 words
A cardiopulmonary resuscitator comprising a reciprocatable cardiac compression means (12 - 19) for cyclically compressing a patient's chest and a ventilating means (26, 27, 96) for inflating the patient's lungs to a benign limiting pressure over a period encompassing at least one cycle of the compressor means, characterised by a ventilator output control means (45, 51, 54) for: (i) preventing retrograde and exhale flow from the patient's lungs during the systolic portion of the cycle of the compressor means thus providing for a pressure increase in the patient's lungs due to compression of the patient's chest, and (ii) periodically venting the patient's lungs.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 103 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 51 words
A cardiopulmonary resuscitator as claimed in Claim 1 in which the ventilator output control means comprises an active non-rebreathing control valve (45, 51) comprising a check valve (50) through which the output of the ventilating means passes and a vent (52, 55) for periodically venting the patient's lungs to the atmosphere.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 35 words
A cardiopulmonary resuscitator as claimed in Claim 2 in which the vent comprises a vent port (55) and an inflatable bladder (53) covering and sealing the vent port when pressure is applied to the bladder.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 48 words
A cardiopulmonary resuscitator as claimed in Claim 3 in which the vent comprises a vent port (52), a pressurizable chamber (61) disposed adjacent the vent port, and a rolling diaphragm (60) disposed in the chamber for sealing the vent port when pressure is applied to the said chamber.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 44 words
A cardiopulmonary resuscitator as claimed in any of Claims 1 to 4 in which the ventilating means includes sealing means comprising an oral cuff (42) dispo.s.ed at the rear of the patient's oral cavity for sealing the patient's nasal passages at the soft palate.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 28 words
A cardiopulmonary resuscitator as claimed in any of Claims 1 to 5 in which the limiting pressure is in a range of 10 to 60 cm of water.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 40 words
A cardiopulmonary resuscitator as claimed in any of Claims 1 to 6 in which the compressor means compresses the patient's chest an amount sufficient to provide a peak intrathoracic pressure in a range of 75 to 200 cm of water.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 36 words
A cardiopulmonary resuscitator as claimed in any of Claims 1 to 7 in which the ventilating means applies the said limiting pressure over a period of time encompassing a plurality of compression cycles or fractions thereof.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 27 words
A cardiopulmonary resuscitator as claimed in Claim 8 in which the ventilating means applies the limiting pressure over a period of time encompassing three complete compression cycles.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 35 words
A cardiopulmonary resuscitator as claimed in Claim 8 or Claim 9 in which the control means periodically vents the patient's lungs over a period of time encompassing a plurality of compression cycles, or fractions thereof.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 28 words
A cardiopulmonary resuscitator as claimed in Claim 10 in which the control means periodically vents the patient's lungs over a period of time encompassing two complete compression cycles.
