Abstract

Abstract In a text processing system including a keyboard (8), a printing mechanism (6), a controlling logic device (2) and a storage (10), the hyphen code that is stored in storage (10) in response to depression of a hyphen key on keyboard (8) is conditioned on printing position and on the codes adjacent to the hyphen code in a text string. If a hyphen is keyed after the start of the return zone, is preceded by a graphic representative code and is followed by a keyed carrier return, a distinctive hyphen code representative of a syllable hyphen is recorded. Otherwise, a regular hyphen is recorded unless the hyphen key has been depressed in conjunction with a condition key, in which case a code representative of a required non-breaking hyphen is recorded. As a result of so controlling the recorded hyphen codes at the time of keyboarding, the operator's intentions for hyphenation may be achieved with little departure from normal keyboarding routine.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 195 words
Hyphen code converter apparatus for use in a text processing system adapted to print characters including hyphens in parallel lines to produce a document and including: a storage for strings of text-representative codes resulting from actuations of a keyboard apparatus, a logic device for maintaining a coded number indicating printer position along a line and means for defining a coded number indicating a beginning position for a right margin return zone along a line, said converter apparatus being characterized in that it comprises: detecting means for detecting a normal hyphen code supplied by said keyboard apparatus, conversion logic means, responsive to said detecting means for selectively substituting a distinctive syllable hyphen code for a normal hyphen code occurring in said text string, said conversion logic means including means for accessing said number indicating printing position and said number indicating the beginning of the return zone and means for comparing the two numbers to determine relative size, and selecting means for selecting between the normal hyphen code and the syllable hyphen code at least in part in accordance with the relative size of said numbers and for inserting the selected code in the stored text string.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 195 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 44 words
Hyphen code converter apparatus according to claim 1 characterized in that means is provided for examining the codes adjacent to a detected hyphen code and said selecting means chooses the inserted hyphen code in part in accordance with the nature of said adjacent codes.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 67 words
Hyphen code converter apparatus according to claim 2 characterized in that; said conversion logic means includes carrier return detecting means for indicating the presence of a keyboarded carrier return occurring in a text string immediately after a hyphen code, and said selecting means chooses the inserted hyphen code in part in accordance with the nature of the succeeding code as indicated by said carrier return detecting means.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 57 words
Hyphen code converter apparatus according to claim 2 or 3 characterized in that: means is provided for examining the code preceding a hyphen code and for indicating the nature of that code, and said selecting means chooses the inserted hyphen code stored with the text string in part in accordance with the nature of the preceding code.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 202 words
For use in a text processing system of the kind having a keyboard apparatus that produces coded signals including at least one signal representative of a hyphen printing operation, and a printing apparatus that responds to coded signals to position a print point and to print indicia along a line, such typewriter further including means for maintaining a stored record of the present printing position along a line and means for establishing a beginning location for a right margin zone along said line, a hyphen code converter apparatus, characterized in that it comprises: means for detecting a hyphen code produced at said keyboard apparatus; means for examining the codes adjacent to said hyphen code in the text string to determine the nature of the printing operations represented thereby; means for selectively converting the hyphen code to a distinctive syllable hyphen code based at least in part on the nature of the adjacent codes as determined by said examining means; means for defining line endings during playback from storage, and means operative on playback from storage for nullifying a syllable hyphen code that does not occur upon playback at a position in the text string that corresponds to the end of a line.
Claim 7
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 38 words
Hyphen code converter apparatus according to claim 5 characterized in that said examining means determines whether the code preceding the hyphen code represents a graphic and whether the code following the hyphen code represents a keyed carrier return.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 51 words
A hyphen code converter apparatus according to claim 5 or 6 characterized in that: means is provided for comparing the present print location and the beginning location for the right margin zone and, said converting means converts codes based in part on the results of the comparison by said comparing means.
