Abstract

Abstract A deposition process especially suitable for coating plastics substrates with transition metals such as chromium comprises vapour depositing the metal on to the substrate and bombarding the deposit with energetic particles. The bombardment reduces tension and/or causes compression in the deposit thereby producing a better quality finish.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 17
Claim 1
Independent Claim 43 words
A deposition process, which comprises depositing a metal on to a substrate from the vapour phase, and bombarding the deposit with energetic particles, characterised in that the energy and number of energetic particles are sufficient to alter the internal stress of the deposit.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 43 words
A deposition process, which comprises depositing a metal on to a substrate from the vapour phase, and bombarding the deposit with energetic particles, characterised in that the energy and number of energetic particles are sufficient to alter the internal stress of the deposit.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 13 words
A process according to Claim 1 wherein the metal comprises a transition metal.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 15 words
A process according to Claim 1 wherein the metal comprises chromium or an alloy thereof.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 22 words
A process according to any one of Claims 1 to 3 wherein the bombardment is effected whilst the metal is being deposited.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 19 words
A process according to any one of Claims 1 to 3 wherein the bombardment is effected after the deposition.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 18 words
A process according to any one of Claims 1 to 5 wherein the substrate comprises a plastics material.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 17 words
A process according to any one of Claims 1 to 6 wherein the energetic particles comprise ions.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 18 words
A process according to Claim 6, wherein the ions have an energy of from 0.1 to 30 Kev.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 27 words
A process according to Claim 7 or Claim 8 wherein the ratio of ions to atons of vapour is in the range of from 0.1:100 to 30:100.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 19 words
A precis according to any one of Claims 7 to 9 wherein the ions are of an inert gas.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 18 words
A process acccrding to any one of Claims 7 to 9 wherein ions are of a transition metal.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 12 words
A process according to Claim 11 wherein the ions are of chromium.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 24 words
A process according to any one of Claims 1 to 12 wherein the metal is one which tends to form a deposit in tension.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim 19 words
A process according to any one of Claims 1 to 13 wherein the deposit is in compression after bombardment.
Claim 16
Dependent Claim 62 words
A process according to any one of Claims 1 to 14 wherein the deposition and the bombardment are carried out by causing relative movement between the substrate and a first location containing the metal at a high vapour density, and a second location containing the energetic particles, whereby the substrate is sequentially exposured to the high vapour density and the energetic particles.
Claim 17
Dependent Claim 17 words
A process according to Claim 15 wherein the substrate is advanced through the first and second locations.
