Claim 1
Independent Claim
149 words
A device for determining the activity of an ionic analyte of a liquid, said device including a pair of solid electrodes each capable qf generating an electrical potential proportional to the activity of an analyte of the liquid in contact with the electrode, and flow control means for ensuring contact of the liquid with the electrode, characterized in that said flow control means includes two opposed surfaces extending from a first location adjacent one of said electrodes to a second location adjacent the other of said electrodes, said surfaces being spaced apart a distance effective to induce capillary flow of the liquid, the zone between said surfaces being in communication with the exterior of the device and with the electrode, whereby liquid in a drop applied to the exterior of the device can flow into the zone, under capillary action within the zone, and into contact with the electrode.
Claim 2
Independent Claim

Claim 3
Dependent Claim
20 words
A device according to claim 1, characterized in that at least 50% of the volume of the zone is void.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
38 words
A device according to claim 1 or 2, characterized in that the zone is in communication with the exterior of the device through an aperture for the liquid or through two apertures one for each of two liquids.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
94 words
A device according to claim 1 or 2, characterized in that the zone is in communication with the exterior of the device through two apertures, the arrangement being such that first liquid in a first drop applied to one of the apertures flows within the zone and into contact with one of the electrodes, and that second liquid in a second drop applied to the other of the apertures flows within the zone and into contact with the other of the electrodes, the first and second liquids also flowing into contact with each other.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim

A device according to claim 6, characterized in that said means for driving a drop of liquid from the edge of the aperture towards the centre of the aperture comprises a hexagonal formation of the bounding surface of the or each aperture.
Claim 9
Independent Claim
21 words
A device according to any one of the preceding claims, characterized in that each of said two opposed surfaces is smooth.
Claim 10
Independent Claim
37 words
A device according to any one of claims 1 to 7, characterized in that at least one of the opposed surfaces includes, across at least a portion thereof, a plurality of grooves formed in a predetermined pattern.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
70 words
A device according to claim 9, characterized in that both opposed surfaces include, across at least opposed portions, a plurality of grooves formed in predetermined patterns, at least a substantial portion of the grooves of one surface being disposed at positive angles with respect to the directly opposed grooves of the other surface whereby liquid introduced between the surfaces is induced to advance with a predetermined peripheral wave front configuration.
