Abstract

Abstract A magnetic transducer head slider support assembly comprises a one-piece arm (10) carrying at one end a one-piece flexure (26) for connection to the transducer head slider (38). The flexure (26) has two outer spaced apart resilient fingers (30) parallel to the longitudinal axis of the arm (10) and joined at their remote ends by a cross leg (34) which is less flexible than the resilient fingers (30). An inner central finger (34) extends parallel to and between the two outer fingers from an offset portion of the cross member. The central finger (34) and the tip (22) of the arm (10) engage one another through a protruding contact (42). The cross-leg (34) is offset by an amount substantially equal to the height of the protruding contact. The arm (10) is generally triangular and made of a resilient material but it is stiffened by flanges (20) along all but a portion of its length at the opposite end to that which carries the flexure (26).

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim 178 words
A support assembly for a magnetic transducer head comprising an arm having a longitudinal axis, one end of the arm being resilient and the remainder of the arm being stiff, the resilient end of the arm being connected to a rigid support and the other end of the arm carrying a flexure for connection to the transducer head, the flexure having two outer spaced apart resilient fingers parallel to the longitudinal axis extending away from the rigid support and joined at their remote ends by a cross leg less flexible than the resilient fingers and an inner central finger extending parallel to the two outer fingers from the cross leg towards the rigid support, the central finger and the tip of said other end of the arm engaging one another through a protruding contact, characterised in that the arm and the flexure are each formed from a single piece of material and the central finger of the flexure extends from an offset portion of the cross-leg, the offset being substantially equal to the height of the protruding contact.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 178 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 21 words
An assembly as claimed in claim 1, in which the protruding contact is a protuberance on the tip of the arm.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 21 words
An assembly as claimed in claim 1, in which the protruding contact consists of a dimple formed in the central finger.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 18 words
An assembly as claimed in claim 3, and a transducer-head-carrying air bearing slider mounted on the central finger.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 47 words
An assembly as claimed in claim 4, in which the protuberance is located on the longitudinal axis and on the axis normal thereto so that the flexure allows pitch-and roll of the slider about these axes in response to changes in the air bearing supporting the slider.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 25 words
An assembly as claimed in claim 5, in which the protuberance is located to apply a force through the centre of gravity of the slider.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 39 words
An assembly as claimed in any preceding claim, in which the arm is formed from one piece of material which is flanged along part of its length to form a channel to provide the stiff portion of the arm.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 19 words
An assembly as claimed in any preceding claim, in which the arm is substantially symmetrical about the longitudinal axis.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 29 words
An assembly as claimed in claim 8, in which the arm is substantially triangular, the central finger of the flexure being engaged by the apex of the triangular arm.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 15 words
An assembly as claimed in any preceding claim, in which the flexure is substantially rectangular.
