Abstract

Abstract In a radar system with a phased array antenna the radiating elements are connected to associated r.f. transmitter-receiver modules. Each of the modules receives a transmitter signal and a local oscillator signal and delivers, upon reception of an echo signal via the antenna an i.f. signal. Furthermore a system of fibre optical waveguides is incorporated to distribute to the modules the transmitter signal and the local oscillator signal, both of which signals being modulated on carriers, which are frequency-matched to the system of fibre optical waveguides. Each of the modules comprises a demodulator to procure the transmitter signal and the local oscillator signal from the applied modulated signals.

Radar system provided with a phased array antenna of which the radiating elements are connected to associated r.f. transmitter-receiver modules, each of which modules being fed with a transmitter signal and a local oscillator signal and, upon reception of an echo signal via said antenna, each of which modules delivering an i.f. signal, characterised in that a system of fibre optical waveguides is incorporated to distribute to said modules the transmitter signal and the local oscillator signal, both of which signals being modulated on carriers, which are frequency-matched to said system of fibre optical waveguides, where each of said modules comprises a demodulator to procure the transmitter signal and the local oscillator signal from the applied modulated signals.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 118 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 30 words
Radar system as claimed in claim 1, characterised in that for each module one fibre optical waveguide is incorporated to conduct both the transmitter signal and the local oscillator signal.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 40 words
Radar system as claimed in claim 2, having a pulse-shaped transmitter signal, characterised in that in the time interval between the successive transmitter pulses the transmitter signal and the local oscillator signal are modulated on one and the same carrier.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 68 words
Radar system as claimed in claim 1, characterised in that each of the modules is provided with a modulator and a light source for generating carriers which are frequency-matched to the system of fibre optical conductors, while said system of fibre optical conductors is designed to combine the i.f. signals delivered by the individual modules, which i.f. signals are modulated on the carriers generated in the modules concerned.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 35 words
Radar system as claimed in claim 4, characterised in that for each module one fibre optical waveguide is incorporated to conduct the transmitter signal and the local oscillator signal, as well as the i.f. signal.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 60 words
Radar system as claimed in claim 5, having a pulse-shaped transmitter signal, characterised in that the transmitter pulses and the local oscillator signal are modulated on a first carrier and the i.f. signal on a second carrier differing in frequency with said first carrier, where the local oscillator signal is modulated in the time interval between the successive transmitter pulses.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 39 words
Radar system as claimed in claim 1, characterised in that for each group of fibre optical conductors a separate laser is incorporated to generate the carriers conveying the transmitter signal and the local oscillator signal to the module concerned.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 33 words
Radar system as claimed in claim 4, characterised in that the system of fibre optical conductors is split into bundles in such a way that the phased array antenna functions as monopulse antenna.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 27 words
Radar system as claimed in claim 1, characterised in that the energy distribution over the individual fibre optical conductors proceeds in accordance with a fixed amplitude taper.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 30 words
Radar system as claimed in claim 9, characterised in that the amplitude taper is achieved by providing each of the modules with an optical attenuator having a given attenuation coefficient.
