Abstract

Abstract A document scanning system includes a scanning device (12) adapted to receive radiation simultaneously from an area (6) of a document inclucing information and an area (8) including a reference element. An exposure control section (14) in the scanning device measures the radiation received from the reference element and when the amount of radiation reaches a predetermined level produces a control signal: Simultaneously a document information section (16) in the scanning device receives radiation from the document information area. On receipt of the control signal the document information section no longer responds to radiation received and provides an output signal representative of the information on the document. The system ensures that the same amount of radiation is received by the document information section regardless of any variations in the supply of radiation.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 7
Claim 1
Independent Claim 171 words
A document scanning system comprises a radiation emitting device for irradiating simultaneously and with identical radiation an area of a document including information, an area including a reference element, a scanner device for scanning said document information area and said reference element area and including a first document information section adapted to respond to radiation from said document information area and a second exposure control section adapted to respond to radiation from said reference element area, said first and second sections receiving radiation simultaneously from said document information area and said reference element area respectively, measuring means included in said exposure control section for measuring the amount of radiation received by said exposure control section and for producing a control signal when said amount reaches a predetermined level, and interrupt means included in said document information section responsive to said control signal to interrupt the response of said document information section to the receipt of radiation and to produce an output signal representative of the information in said document information area.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 171 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 25 words
A document scanning system as claimed in claim 1 in which said first and second sections of said scanner device are manufactured from similar components.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 18 words
A document scanning system as claimed in claim 2 in which said scanner device is an integrated circuit.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 22 words
A document scanning system as claimed in claim 3 in which said scanner device comprises photo sensitive elements and charge coupled devices.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 29 words
A document scanning system as claimed in any one of the preceding claims in which said reference element is arranged to be framed by a portion of the document.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 22 words
A document scanning system as claimed in any one of the preceding claims in which said radiation emitting device emits visible light.
