Claim 1
Independent Claim
163 words
A process for preparing a non-gelled self-emulsifiable epoxy ester copolymer which comprises reacting together (i) an acidic copolymer comprising a solution copolymer of monoethylenically unsaturated monomers containing from 20 to 80 percent by weight, based on the total monomers, of monoethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid monomers; and (ii) an epoxy resin comprising an aromatic polyether containing oxirane groups and having an average molecular weight of at least 1500, at least 5% of the aromatic polyethers being constituted by diepoxide, in an amount sufficient to constitute at least 40 percent of the total resin solids and to provide a ratio of oxirane groups to carboxyl groups in the acidic copolymer of from 1:2 to 1:20; in an organic solvent in the presence of more than 2 percent by weight, based on the reactants, of an amine esterification catalyst at a temperature sufficient to cause substantially all of the oxirane groups in the epoxy resin to be consumed by the carboxyl groups in the acidic copolymer.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
27 words
A process according to claim 1, wherein at least a portion of the free carboxyl groups of the epoxy ester copolymer product is reacted with a base.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
11 words
A process according to claim 2, wherein the base is dimethylaminoethanol.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
21 words
A process according to any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein the monoethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer is methacrylic acid.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
32 words
A process according to claim 4, wherein the acidic copolymer is a solution copolymer of monoethylenically unsaturated monomers containing from 30 to 70 percent, based on the total monomers, of methacrylic acid.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
23 words
A process according to any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein the acidic compolymer has a molecular weight of 5,000 to 20,000.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
46 words
A process according to any one of claims 1 to 6, wherein the epoxy resin is a mixture of aromatic polyethers at least 5 percent by weight of which contain oxirane groups and at least 5 percent by weight of which are devoid of oxirane groups.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
33 words
A process according to any one of claims 1 to 7, wherein the epoxy resin is a mixture of aromatic polyethers from 40 to 90 percent by weight of which are diglycidyl ethers.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim

Claim 12
Dependent Claim
33 words
A process according to any one of claims 1 to 10, wherein the amine esterification catalyst is used in an amount of from 4 to 10 percent by weight, based on the reactants.
