Abstract

The invention relates to gas sensors in which the sensitive semiconductor body consists of a thin layer of a metal oxide semiconductor. To produce the metal oxide semiconductor thin layer, a substrate is coated with a film of an organic solution and the film is converted into a thin metal oxide semiconductor layer by stepwise heat treatment. The solution contains a metal compound that changes into metal oxide during thermal or hydrolytic decomposition. Binary and ternary compounds of the formula A n O m and A n B m Op are suitable, in which both A and B are an element from the group of rare earths, noble metals or transition metals and oxygen and n, m and p are Are parts of the respective elements. The coating can be done by dipping, spraying, spin coating or dripping on. The thin semiconductor layer can be doped with at least one element from the group of rare earths, noble metals or transition metals. Gas sensors according to the invention consist of a substrate (1). a thin metal oxide semiconductor layer (2) produced from the organic solution mentioned and a contact layer (3) made of noble metal. Gas sensors according to the invention are suitable for the detection and determination of various harmful gases such as CO, C n H m , C 6 H 6 and in particular ethanol in air and exhaust gases (FIG. 1).
