Abstract
Abstract Apparatus for determining the presence of predetermined constituents such as potassium ions, calcium ions, or gases in a liquid such as blood, beer, milk or effluent, in which the liquid is passed through a helical passage partly defined by membrane means through which the desired constituents may pass. The desired constituents which pass through the membrane are subsequently analysed by analytical means which is thereby not contaminated by other constituents of the liquid under test.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 14
Claim 1
Independent Claim
63 words
Apparatus for determining the presence of predetermined constituents in a liquid including a helical passage for the liquid, membrane means forming a wall of said helical passage permeable to said predetermined constituents to provide predetermined relative concentrations of said constituents on each side of the membrane and means for analysing a carrier fluid containing the predetermined constituents which have permeated through the membrane.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
15 words
Apparatus as claimed in claim 1 in which the carrier fluid is a separate fluid.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
14 words
Apparatus as claimed in claim 1 in which the carrier fluid is a gas.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
13 words
Apparatus as claimed in claim 1 in which the carrier fluid is liquid.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
16 words
Apparatus as claimed in claim 1 in which the carrier fluid is provided by the liquid.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
19 words
Apparatus as claimed in claim 5 in which the carrier fluid is water separated from the liquid under test.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
48 words
Apparatus as claimed in any of claims 1 to 6 in which there is provided analysis means for the analysis of the gas or dissolved ions in the carrier fluid, said analysis means including electrodes which are sensitive to the particular constituent in question and a reference electrode.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
50 words
Apparatus as claimed in any of claims 1 to 7 for determining the presence of predetermined constituents in blood in which means is provided for connecting the apparatus to a patient whereby blood may be continuously withdrawn from a patient, passed through the apparatus and thereafter returned to the patient.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
27 words
Apparatus as claimed in any of claims 1 to 8 in which the helical passage is formed as a groove on the outside of a cylindrical member.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
15 words
Apparatus as claimed in claim 9 in which the cylindrical member is of silicone rubber.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim
20 words
Apparatus as claimed in claim 9 or claim 10 in which the cylindrical member is surrounded by a cylindrical membrane.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim
23 words
Apparatus as claimed in claim 11 in which the membrane is surrounded by an outer sleeve having a groove on its inner surface.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim
36 words
Apparatus as claimed in any of claims 1 to 12 in which the means for analysing the carrier fluid includes means for supplying a reference fluid in place of the carrier fluid to calibrate the apparatus.
