Abstract

Abstract A push-pull amplifier arrangement for driving a radio transmitter is shown. It comprises two high power transistors (5 and 6) connected in push-pull through the primary (8) of an output transformer (10). The base-emitter circuit of each transistor has a separate and independent input drive circuit comprising an input circuit (28) and a transformer (20) for one transistor (5) and an input circuit (28A) and a transformer (20A) for the other transistor (6). The transistors are biased to operate in Class AB.The use of separate drive circuits for the two transistors considerably reduces distortion. The impedance circuits (28 and 28A) assist in reducing distortion and may be frequency-dependent.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 6
Claim 1
Independent Claim 82 words
An amplifier circuit arrangement, comprising two amplifier devices (5, 6) connected together to provide a push-pull output and biased so as to operate in Class AB or B characterised in that each amplifier device (5, 6) has a respective and separately transformer-coupled driving circuit (28, 20; 28A, 20A), such that when an input current is applied to one of the amplifier devices (e.g.5) through its respective driving circuit (28, 20) substantially none of the current is applied to the other amplifier device (e.g.6).
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 82 words
An amplifier circuit arrangement, comprising two amplifier devices (5, 6) connected together to provide a push-pull output and biased so as to operate in Class AB or B characterised in that each amplifier device (5, 6) has a respective and separately transformer-coupled driving circuit (28, 20; 28A, 20A), such that when an input current is applied to one of the amplifier devices (e.g.5) through its respective driving circuit (28, 20) substantially none of the current is applied to the other amplifier device (e.g.6).
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 93 words
An arrangement according to claim 1, characterised in that each driving circuit includes a respective transformer (20; 20A) having its secondary winding (22; 22A) connected to drive the respective one of the two amplifier devices (5, 6) and its primary winding (26; 26A) connected to receive, in anti-phase with the primary winding (22; 22A) of the other transformer (20; 20A) and through a respective impedance (28; 28A), the input signal to be amplified, the windings of each transformer (20; 20A) not being inductively coupled with the windings of the other transformer (20; 20A).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 51 words
An arrangement according to claim 2, characterised in that the input impedance at the primary winding (22, 22A) of each transformer (5, 6) varies with increasing frequency of the input signal and the impedance (28; 28A) through which each primary winding (5, 6) is energised is frequency-dependent so as to compensate.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 28 words
An arrangement according to any preceding claim, characterised in that the two amplifier devices are respective high power bi-polar transistors (5, 6) having their outputs connected in push-pull.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 20 words
An arrangement according to any preceding claim, characterised by a radio transmitter connected to be driven by the push-pull output.
