Abstract

Abstract An inorganic refractory insulation article comprising randomly oriented refractory fibers retained by dried colloidal silica uniformly distributed throughout the article and containing from about 0.001 to about 1.5 percent by weight of the article of aluminium chlorhydrate. The invention further comprises the process for making the article by forming a fiber mat from a fiber slurry, impregnating the mat with a conditioned colloidal silica composition comprising colloidal silica, acid, aluminium chlorhydrate and water and drying the mat to form the article.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 14
Claim 1
Independent Claim 72 words
A process for forming a refractory fiber article comprising forming a fiber mat from a refractory fiber slurry by placing said slurry into a mold and draining liquid therefrom; impregnating the resulting fiber article with a conditioned colloidal silica composition comprising colloidal silica acid and a multivalent cation containing compound; applying a differential pressure through said article; waiting for the conditioned colloidal silica composition to gel and drying the resulting fiber article.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 72 words
A process for forming a refractory fiber article comprising forming a fiber mat from a refractory fiber slurry by placing said slurry into a mold and draining liquid therefrom; impregnating the resulting fiber article with a conditioned colloidal silica composition comprising colloidal silica acid and a multivalent cation containing compound; applying a differential pressure through said article; waiting for the conditioned colloidal silica composition to gel and drying the resulting fiber article.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 41 words
The process of Claim 1 wherein said fiber slurry is an aqueous slurry containing from about 0.5 to about 3 weight percent of refractory fiber, said article is an insulation board and the multivalent cation containing gelling agent is aluminum chlorhydrate.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 20 words
The process of Claim 2 wherein said fiber slurry contains from about 0.04 to about 0.2 weight percent colloidal silica.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 20 words
The process of Claim 3 wherein said fiber slurry contains from about 0.01 to about .1 weight percent colloidal clay.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 11 words
The process of Claim 4 wherein said colloidal clay is bentonite.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 25 words
The process of Claim 3 wherein said board is impregnated with from about 10 to about 80 volume percent of said conditioned colloidal silica composition.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 60 words
The process of Claim 3 wherein the conditioned colloidal silica is an aqueous composition containing from about 15 to about 20 weight percent Si0 2 , sufficient hydrochloric acid to obtain a pH of between about 4.8 and about 5.4; from about 0.05 to about 0.12 percent aluminum chlorhydrate by weight of conditioned colloidal silica and the balance being water.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 29 words
The process of Claim 1 wherein said fiber board is dried at a temperature of from about 150 to about 600°C for from about 1 to about 12 hours.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 32 words
An inorganic refractory insulation article comprising randomly oriented refractory fibers retained by dried colloidal silica uniformly distributed throughout the article and from about 0,001 to about 1.5 weight percent of aluminum chlorhydrate.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 32 words
An inorganic refractory insulation article comprising randomly oriented refractory fibers retained by dried colloidal silica uniformly distributed throughout the article and from about 0,001 to about 1.5 weight percent of aluminum chlorhydrate.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 73 words
The insulation article of Claim 9 wherein said article is a board which is formed by placing a refractory fiber slurry containing colloidal silica into a mold; draining liquid therefrom; impregnating the resulting damp fiber board with a conditioned colloidal silica composirion comprising colloidal silica, acid and multivalent cation containing compound creating a differential pressure through the board; waiting for the conditioned colloidal silica composition to gel and drying the resulting fiber board.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 14 words
The article of Claim 10 wherein said multivalent cation containing compound is aluminum chlorhydrate.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 78 words
The article of Claim 9 wherein said board has a density of from about 0.4 to about 0.6 gms/cc, contains from about 30 to about 50 weight percent fiber, from about 10 to about 45 weight percent dried colloidal silica, from about 0,001 about 1.5 weight aluminum chlorhydrate and the balance being a filler selected from the group consisting of colloidal clay, ground silica having an average particle size of smaller than about 200 mesh, and mixtures thereof.
