Abstract
Abstract The invention provides a method of metal coating diamond or cubic boron nitride particles, the metal being capable of forming a chemical bond with the particles, including the steps of providing a mass of metal for the coating in powdered form in contact with the particles, heat treating the metal powder and the particles at a temperature below the melting point of the metal to deposit a layer of metal on the particles, and recovering the particles as discrete, metal coated particles, the heat treatment taking place in a non-oxidising atmosphere and being chosen to allow chemical bond formation between the particles and the coating.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 13
Claim 1
Independent Claim
90 words
A method of metal coating diamond or cubic boron nitride particles, the metal being capable of forming a chemical bond with the particles, characterised by contacting the particles with the metal in powdered form, heat-treating the resulting metal powder and the particles in a non-oxidising atmosphere at a temperature below the melting point of the metal so as to deposit a layer of metal on the particles and so as to allow chemical bond formation between the particles and the coating, and recovering the particles as discrete, metal coated particles.
Claim 2
Independent Claim
90 words
A method of metal coating diamond or cubic boron nitride particles, the metal being capable of forming a chemical bond with the particles, characterised by contacting the particles with the metal in powdered form, heat-treating the resulting metal powder and the particles in a non-oxidising atmosphere at a temperature below the melting point of the metal so as to deposit a layer of metal on the particles and so as to allow chemical bond formation between the particles and the coating, and recovering the particles as discrete, metal coated particles.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
33 words
A method according to claim 1 wherein the particles and powdered metal are heat-treated in the form of a mixture with the particles being substantially uniformly distributed through a mass of metal powder.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
16 words
A method according to claim 1 or claim 2 wherein heat treatment does not exceed 1000°C.
Claim 5
Independent Claim
52 words
A method according to any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein the heat treatment involves raising the temperature of the powdered metal and particles to a desired elevated temperature and then maintaining this elevated temperature for a period sufficient to allow the metal to deposit onto the particles and bond thereto.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
20 words
A method according to claim 4 wherein the elevated temperature is maintained for a period of less than 60 minutes.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
19 words
A method according to claim 4 wherein the elevated temperature is maintained for a period of about 30 minutes.
Claim 8
Independent Claim
22 words
A method according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the metal is titanium, manganese, chromium, vanadium, tungsten, molybdenum or niobium.
Claim 9
Independent Claim
21 words
A method according to any one of claims 1 to 7 wherein the particles are diamond and the metal is titanium.
Claim 10
Independent Claim
29 words
A method according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the non-oxidising atmosphere is an inert gas or a vacuum of 1 x 10 -4 Torr or better.
Claim 11
Independent Claim
23 words
A method according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the metal powder has a particle size from 125 to 37 microns.
Claim 12
Independent Claim
