Claim 2

1 A therapeutic preparation characterised in that it comprises as an active ingredient an effective dosage of a 3-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone compound of formula (I) a tautomer or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, wherein R 1 is an unsubstituted or substituted cycloalkyl group having 3 to 12 carbon atoms in the cycloalkyl ring, other than 2-cyclohexyl 3-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone.

2 A compound of formula (II) a tautomer or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, characterised in that R 2 is an unsubstituted or substituted cycloalkyl group, having 3 to 5 or 7 to 12 carbon atoms in the cycloalkyl ring other than 2-cyclopentyl-3-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone.

2 A compound of formula (II) a tautomer or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, characterised in that R 2 is an unsubstituted or substituted cycloalkyl group, having 3 to 5 or 7 to 12 carbon atoms in the cycloalkyl ring other than 2-cyclopentyl-3-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone.

3 A therapeutic preparation or a compound as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 characterised in that R 1 is an unsubstituted cycloalkyl group.

4 A therapeutic preparation or a compound as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3 characterised in that a sodium , potassium or N-methyl glucamine salt of the compound is present.

7 A process for producing a compound of formula (II), as defined in claim 2, characterised in that the corresponding 3-halogeno analogue of the compound is hydrolysed under alkaline conditions to provide the 3-hydroxy-substituted compound.

8 A process for producing a compound of formula (II), as defined in claim 2, characterised in that a compound of formula (IV) wherein R 4 is a halogeno, hydroxy, acetoxy or alkoxy group is reacted with a cycloalkyl donor compound corresponding with the desired cycloalkyl group R 2 , and, whenever necessary, hydrolysing the resultant 3-halogeno-or3-acetoxy-or 2-alkoxy- compound under alkaline conditions.

9 A process for producing a compound of formula (II), as defined in claim 2, characterised in that the next higher Regler homologue, 2-cycloalkylmethyl-3-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone, is subjected to Hooker oxidation.

12 A composition for treating theileriosis in appropriate mammals characterised in that a therapeutic preparation or a compound as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 6 or 10 is presented in association with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.

Claim 18

13 A method of prophylactically treating theileriosis in cattle and sheep characterised in that an effective amount of a compound of formula (I) presented according to any one of claims 1 to 6, or 10 or 12, is administered to an animal potentially exposed to an infection with a pathogenic Theileria species.
