Abstract In order to be able to identify grinding wheels provided for different machining tasks, coded information in the form of coding grooves (6) is provided in the receiving flange (3) of the grinding wheel (1). Said coding grooves are scanned by a plurality of detector elements (7) which are arranged on a monitoring head (2) which can be advanced axis-parallel to the grinding wheel. <IMAGE>
