Optical fibre polarisation device - has crystal block with edge face in contact with polished surface of optical conductor
Abstract
Abstract The polarisation device has a transparent crystal block (3) with an edge face (2) in contact with a polished section of the optical conductor (1), so that part of the optical wave-field within the latter is coupled with the edge face (2). The absorption of light by the edge face (2) or the block (3) and/or the transfer of light from the optical conductor (1) to the block (3) is dependant on the polarisation. Pref. the block (3) exhibits double refraction with the position of its optical axis chosen so that the refractive indices for two orthogonal polarisation directions are different. These two refractive indices may be respectively below and above the refractive index of the core of the optical conductor (1). The latter is polished to provide a contact surface extending over a given length (L) within the outer sheath or down as far as the core and it may be held in contact with the edge face (2) of the block (3) by the curved edge of a glass plate clamped in turn between two glass blocks.
