Terminal double bond-contg. aromatic polycarbonate - is crosslinked to solvent-resistant prod. by UV light irradiation after adding photoinitiator
Abstract
Abstract New crosslinkable aromatic polycarbonates having average wt. mol. wt., Mw, 10000-200000 (20000-80000) are derived from diphenols and monofunctional chain-breakers and have formula E-O-Z-O-(COOZ-O)-nE (I) (where Z is a diphenol derived from a divalent aromatic gp.; n is 20-400; E is m is 0 or 1 and R is H or 1-3C alkyl). A process is also claimed for modifying (I) by UV light irradiation after adding, by wt. w.r.t. (I), 0.05-5 (1-3)% photo-initiator, opt. 0.05-5 (1-3)% photo-reducing agent and opt. 0.05-5 (0.1-2)% flame-retardant. The polycarbonates can be crosslinked by UV irradiation in the presence of photo-initiator, opt. photo-reducing agent and flame-retardant to form prods. resistant to organic solvent and to stress corrosion and having uniform thermal and mechanical properties. In an example, replacement of methacryloyl chloride by p-tert. Bu phenol as chain-breaker, reduced CCl4-resistance of modified polycarbonate from >180- to 1 sec. Non-inflammable prods. graded as VO on UL 94 standard scale can be obtd.
