Abstract

Abstract The coupling has two elements (5) secured to respective shafts (1) and contained in a fluid-tight housing (2). Rotation is transmitted by the shear resistance of a viscous fluid, e.g. a solution of 10-20% natural rubber in xylol, contained in the housing. To increase the shear area, the elements may each comprise a disc (4) having axial annular projections arranged for the projections of the one disc to be interdigitated with those of the other disc. The coupling satisfies the changes in torque and diameter in drives for coiling or uncoiling of web material or the like.
