Abstract

Abstract The steering column (2) and/or the steering wheel (13) are displaced from a potential head injury position for the car occupant if a crash occurs. The displaceable steering wheel has a displacement unit (6) which includes a locking unit with which the steering wheel and steering column are stowed in a specific location. The locking unit has a release device (9,10) which is activated in a crash to release the lock. The lock is released by motor, pyrotechnics, electrically or pneumatically. The stowing of the wheel and column is activated by the mass moment or by a recoil of an airbag (14) stored in the steering appts. . Alternatively the displacement unit (6) has a driven displacement device (15) which is activated in a crash to push the steering column and wheel to the front and out of a danger area for the occupant.
