Device for connecting a laser diode to an optical fibre
Abstract
Abstract In order to be able to adjust the relative positions of the diode with respect to the fibre in three dimensions and easily replace these, the device comprises first means (10) for assembling the body of the device (1) with the diode (D) and with a focusing lens (L) and second means (30) for assembling the body (1) with the optical fibre (F). The axial distance between the diode (D) and the lens (L) is regulated by the first means (10) in order to adjust the focal point of the lens (L) in a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the body (1) and passing through the end (361) of the fibre (F). Positioning the end (361) of the fibre in two transverse directions, in the aforementioned plane, is achieved by the second means (30) for centring the end (361) of the fibre on the focal point of the lens. These adjustments are controlled by screw nuts (24) which can move longitudinally and which flank fingers (232) which are rigidly connected to a ferrule (sleeve) (23) carrying the lens (L) and by transverse screws (383) butting up against the end of a ferrule (sleeve) (31, 38) carrying the end (361) of the fibre. The device is used especially for the connection of a laser diode and a low-attenuation multimode fibre in a fibre-optic transmission system. <IMAGE>
