Abstract

Abstract ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Electrodes sensitive to the activity of ionic species are disclosed comprising an amorphous oxide of a metal from either of the platinum or rhenium groups of metals. In accordance with a preferred embodiment of the invention, an electrically free standing electrode is provided. In accordance with another embodiment, an ion sensitive field effect transistor employing as the electrochemically active species an amorphous oxide of a metal from either of the platinum or rhenium groups of metals is disclosed. Amorphous iridium oxide, especially sputtered iridium oxide, is preferred for use in connection with certain embodiments of the invention. The foregoing electrode materials demonstrate good electrochemical stability, Nernstian response, excellent physical resiliency and corrosion resistant, low impedance and facility for microlithographic fabrication. Measuring the electrochemical potential generated by contacting the electrodes of this invention with the ionic species to which they are sensitive with potential measurement means provides a measurement of the activity of said species.
