Abstract

Abstract STRUCTURE FOR MOUNTING BACKPLANE APPARATUS Holding members in mounting apertures of certain types of apparatus in cooperation with shoulders on backplane wiring pins secure the apparatus to the pins. The pins are inserted through the apertures. A holding member is formed of a tapered wall surface of an aperture which form a constriction in the aperture. The wall bearing the holding member is made of an elastic material which flexes to allow the shoulder of a pin to pass the holding member during insertion. After the shoulder passes the holding member, the wall conforms substantially to its original shape and locates the holding member behind the shoulder to hold the apparatus in place. The invention solves the prior problem in which apparatus frictionally mounted on the pins loosen in time due to "stress relaxation" of the apparatus material.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim 135 words
Means for fixedly mounting apparatus to electrical wiring pins in backplane wiring panels, wherein the pins protrude perpendicularly from the surface of the panel and contain an enlarged shoulder and the apparatus comprises a base surface having a plurality of mounting apertures for receiving the pins, each said mounting aperture being characterized by at least one holding member located on an interior surface of the wall of the mounting aperture forming a wedge-like constriction in the mounting aperture, the wall bearing the holding member being arranged to operate elastically to allow the shoulder of a pin to pass the holding member during insertion of the pin into the aperture and to conform substantially to its original shape so that the holding member rests behind the shoulder after such passage to hold the apparatus in place.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 135 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 31 words
The invention of claim 1 in which the wall bearing the holding member has a prescribed thickness sufficiently thin to render it flexible to pass an associated pin shoulder during insertion.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 56 words
The invention of claim 2 in which ones of the mounting apertures are arranged row-like in the base surface and wherein the base surface further contains a plurality of second apertures each located between adjacent ones of the mounting apertures to establish the prescribed thickness of the walls of the mounting apertures bearing the holding members.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 72 words
The invention of claim 1 in which the holding member forms a wedge-shaped taper in the mounting aperture progressively narrowing the aperture in the direction of pin insertion thus to form the constriction, and further comprises a lip ending the taper at a prescribed point in the mounting aperture and enlarging the aperture at that point, said lip resting behind the pin shoulder after its passage to hold the apparatus in place.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 25 words
The invention of claim 4 in which the mounting aperture comprises four wall surfaces having holding members located on two opposing ones of these surfaces.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 32 words
The invention of claim 5 in which each wedge-shaped taper is formed by an interior surface of its respective wall which progressively narrows the mounting aperture in the direction of pin insertion.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 64 words
The invention of claim 5 further comprising at least two pin aligning members located on opposite wall surfaces of the mounting aperture and arranged to contact elastically diagonally opposite sides of the pin shoulder when the pin is inserted into the mounting aperture, thereby to center the pin in the mounting aperture and to maintain its proper alignment with respect to the mounting aperture.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 46 words
The invention of claim 7 in which the aligning members are located near the corners of the wall surfaces on which the holding members are formed and above the holding members and projection partially into the mounting aperture to contact diagonally opposite sides of a shoulder.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 102 words
The invention of claim 1 wherein a said apparatus is an encoding key carrier for a plug-in circuit board, said carrier being equipped with a plurality of mounting apertures having said holding members for mounting the apparatus on wiring pins of a circuit board receptacle, said carrier comprising at least one peg extending in a direction parallel to the direction of insertion and being arranged to coincide with a corresponding hole in a connector on a properly coded circuit board to allow the insertion of the connector and circuit board into the receptacle and to block insertion of an improperly coded board.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 94 words
The invention of claim 1 wherein a said apparatus is a circuit board guide block designed to be mounted onto backplane wiring pins to define a circuit board receptacle and to guide a circuit board and connector into the receptacle, comprising a base surface having a plurality of apertures through which selected pins protrude for mating with terminals of a circuit board connector, and having a plurality of mounting apertures also through which selected pins protrude, each said mounting aperture being equipped with said holding members for securing the guide block to the pins.
