Abstract
Abstract FIRE RETARDING JOINT TREATMENT ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A wallboard joint concealing structure with paper joint tape held in place by not only the usual bed coat of a setting type joint compound, but also by mechanical fasteners such as staples, which, in fire tests, remains in place about four times as long as prior joint concealing treatments, improving markedly the fire retarding rating of the wall.

Claim 1
Independent Claim
124 words
A drywall joint structure comprising a pair of abutting tapered edge gypsum wallboards, an elongate, shallow, relatively-wide V-shaped groove formed by the tapered edges of said pair of wallboards, said V-shaped groove being substantially filled with an elongate thin narrow paper tape substantially totally surrounded by a dried joint compound, and a plurality of mechanical fasteners extending through said tape and into but not entirely through said wallboard, said tape being held to said wallboard by both the adhesive character of the joint compound disposed between the tape and the wallboard, and said mechanical fasteners, whereby said tape and joint compound can be relied upon to remain in place for a markedly increased time period, if and when said structure is subjected to fire.

Claim 3
Dependent Claim
11 words
The structure of claim 1 wherein said mechanical fasteners are staples.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
25 words
The structure of claim 1 wherein said joint compound engaging said tape is of a type in which the binder includes a settable reacting component.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
11 words
The structure of claim 3 wherein said mechanical fasteners are staples.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
20 words
The structure of claim 1 wherein said mechanical fasteners are spaced apart from about 3 inches to about 24 inches.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
19 words
The structure of claim 5 wherein said mechanical fasteners are substantially all arranged on alternating sides of the joint.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
11 words
The structure of claim 6 wherein said mechanical fasteners are staples.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
24 words
The structure of claim 7 wherein said staples are of a width of about 3/8 inch and have legs of about 1/4 inch length.
