Abstract

Abstract VARIABLE SIZE, MULTI-SECTION ARTICLE FOR CONDITIONING FABRICS IN A CLOTHES DRYER ABSTRACT A variable size article for conditioning of fabrics in a laundry dryer comprising a multi-section, sheet-like flexible sub-strate carrying one or more conditioning agents transferable to fabrics when tumbled therewith in a clothes dryer. The dryer operator varies the size of the multi-section flexible substrate to match the amount of fabric conditioning agent to be used to the load size, or quantity of clothes, loaded in the dryer. The fabric conditioning article may comprise synthetics such as polyesters and rayon, or natural materials such as cotton, wool felt, or any cellulosic or non-cellulosic material, and com-binations of any of these, in combination with fabric conditioning substance. The substrate material is preferably in sheet form, and may be woven, non-woven, carded web, or formed as a continuous film. Non-woven fibrous materials may be water-laid, air-laid or other-wise formed into sheets. The conditioning materials may be incor-porated during fabrication of the article, or may be subsequently combined with the substrate by immersion, padding, spraying, roller contact, brush contact or any convenient means. Typical fabric conditioning agents include cationic fabric softeners, nonionic and anionic surfactants, perfumes, brighteners, crisping agents, sizing materials and combinations of these. The preferred mode of use is in the clothes dryer, but the article may also be used in the washing machine, preferably in the rinse cycle.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 4
Claim 1
Independent Claim 121 words
A conditioner article for softening clothes in a washer or dryer comprising a sheetlike substrate, having a fa-bric conditioner coated on both surfaces of said substrate, said fabric conditioner having a softening point in the range of 100°F. to 170°F., and being selected from the group con-sisting of: a. cationic quaternary ammonium salts and imidazolinium salts; b. nonionic compounds; c. anionic soaps, sulfates and sulfonates; d. emphoteric tertiary ammonium compounds; e. Zwitterionic quaternary ammonium compounds; and f. compatible mixtures of one or more compounds of these classes; said substrate being subdividable into a plurality of at least two smaller subsections to permit adjusting the size of the fabric conditioner article in direct proportion to the quan-tity of clothing to be conditioned.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 121 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 39 words
The conditioner article of claim 1 wherein the nonionic compounds are selected from the group consisting of tallow glyceride alkyloxylates, tertiary phosphone oxides, tertiary amine oxides, sorbitan esters, ethoxylated alcohols and alkyl phenols, ethoxylated amines and ethoxylated sorbi-tan esters.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 43 words
The conditioner article of claim 1 or 2 wherein the anionic soaps, sulfates and sulfonates are selected from the group consisting of fatty acid soaps, ethoxylated alcohol sulfates, sodium alkyl sulfates, alkyl sulfonates, sodium al-kylbenzenesulfonates and sodium or potassium alkyl glyceryl ether sulfonates.
