Abstract

Abstract SUBTERRANEAN TANK LEAK DETECTION SYSTEM AND METHOD An improved system for detection of leakage of petroleum products from subterranean tanks is disclosed wherein the tanks are provided with a leak sensing means positioned adjacent at the tank, and the tank together with the leak sensor is enclosed in an impervious bag which is sealed about the tank to prevent actuation of the leak sensor except due to leakage from the tank. In a preferred form the leak sensor is housed in a perforated duct which extends through and is sealed within the bag permitting access to the leak sensor and the interior of the bag in the event that a leak is detected. A preferred material for use in making the bag is a nylon reinforced vinyl sheet.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 18
Claim 1
Independent Claim 111 words
A method of detecting leakage from a subterranean tank containing a liquid product such as gasoline or heating oil or other chemicals, comprising providing leak sensing means of the type that has a material that is subject to degradation by said liquid product positioned adjacent said tank, enclosing said leak sensing means and said tank together in a bag impervious to said product, sealing said bag to prevent the ingress of said product due to accidental spillage, or from other sources of said product, and connecting said leak sensing means to means for providing a signal whereby leakage from said tank into said bag is detected by said leak sensing means.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Independent Claim 105 words
A method of detecting leakage from a subterranean tank containing a petroleum product, such as gasoline or heating oil, comprising providing an electrical leak detecting cable, of the type that has an insulator that is subject to degradation by said petroleum product, positioned adjacent said tank, enclosing said cable and said tank together in a bag impervious to said product, sealing said bag to prevent the ingress of said product due to accidential spillage, or from other sources of said product, and connecting said cable to an electrical sensor, whereby leakage from said tank into said bag is detected by said cable and electrical sensor.
Claim 4
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 19 words
A method as claimed in claim 2 wherein said electrical leak detecting cable is positioned in a perforated duct.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 20 words
A method as claimed in claim 1, 2 or 3 wherein said bag is formed from nylon reinforced vinyl sheet.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 22 words
A method a claimed in claim 2 wherein air trapped in said bag is removed by vacuuming prior to sealing said bag.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 68 words
In a system for detection of leakage of petroleum products from a subterranean tank wherein said tank is provided with a leak sensing means positioned adjacent said tank, the improvement comprising an impervious bag enclosing said tank and said leak sensing means, said bag being sealed to prevent spilled petroleum products or leakage in the soil from causing said leak sensor to give an output indicating a leak.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 68 words
In a system for detection of leakage of petroleum products from a subterranean tank wherein said tank is provided with a leak sensing means positioned adjacent said tank, the improvement comprising an impervious bag enclosing said tank and said leak sensing means, said bag being sealed to prevent spilled petroleum products or leakage in the soil from causing said leak sensor to give an output indicating a leak.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 21 words
In a system as defined in claim 6, said leak sensing means being installed in a perforated duct within said bag.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 20 words
In a system as defined in claims 6 or 7, the bag being formed of a nylon reinforced vinyl material.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 18 words
In a system as defined in claim 7, the air being removed from said bag prior to sealing.
Claim 13
Independent Claim 16 words
The method as claimed in claims 1 or 2, wherein said bag con-tains chemical corrosion inhibitors.
Claim 14
Independent Claim 16 words
The method defined in claims 1 or 2, which said tank is a bare steel tank.
Claim 15
Independent Claim 18 words
The method defined in claims 1 or 2, wherein said bag is formed of reinforced oil impervious plastic.
Claim 16
Dependent Claim 14 words
