A product, suitable for the removal of heavy metals, transition metals and actinide metals from solution, obtained by reacting (a) an inorganic solid containing surface hydroxyl groups with (b) a compound of formula (I) (I) wherein R1, R2 and R3, which may be the same or different, are organic radicals containing up to 20 carbon atoms, and n is an integer from 1 to 10, and (c) an aromatic hydroxyaldehyde.
