Abstract

Abstract ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An air flow deflector for use at the rear of heavy vehicles is disclosed. The deflector comprises a profiled plate generally in the shape of a "S" in transverse cross-section adapted to be mounted vertically, one on each side, at the rear of the vehicle body for deflecting the air flow directly outward to prevent air turbulence.

Total Claims: 7
Claim 1
Independent Claim 300 words
An air flow deflector for reducing air turbulence at the rear of heavy vehicles provided with a box-shaped body having a substantially vertical rectangular rear surface defining upright corner edges, comprising a pair of profiled, rectangular imperforate plates each having a length substantially equal to the height of said rear surface and a width substantially equal to one-third the width of said rear surface, each plate having an inner and an outer surface, means for mounting each plate upright on said body with the inner surface of said plate facing the rear surface of said body, with one longitudinal edge portion of each plate substantially coincident with a corner edge of said rear surface and with said plate extending in spaced substantially parallel relationship with and partially covering said rear surface, each plate, when mounted on said body, having its other longitudinal edge portion substantially parallel to the other longitudinal edge portion of the other plate and spaced from said last named other longitudinal portion transversely of said rear surface, each plate having a transverse cross-section in the shape of a 5 with said one longitudinal edge portion, when said plate is mounted on said body, directed towards but spaced from said rear surface and said other longitudinal edge portion directed away from said rear surface, whereby, when said plates are mounted on said body of a forwardly moving vehicle, air will flow from said corner edges towards the center of said rear surface, some of said air passing between said rear surface and the inner surface of said plates to emerge between said other longitudinal edge portions of said plates and other of said air passing along said outer surface of said plates to be deflected rearwardly of said body by said other longitudinal edge portions of said plates.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 300 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 43 words
An air flow deflector as defined in claim 1, wherein each plate has top and bottom edge portions which are inwardly curved and extending towards but spaced from the rear surface of the vehicle body when said plate is mounted on said body.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 43 words
An air flow deflector as defined in claim 1, wherein said means for mounting each plate on said body includes hinge means to permit pivotal movement of the plate to a position along the side of the vehicle body uncovering said rear surface.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 75 words
An air flow deflector as defined in claim 3, wherein said mounting means include two transverse bars secured to and located one adjacent the top and the other adjacent the bottom of the plate, two hinges located at the corner edges of the vehicle body and upon which each bar is pivotally mounted et one end, and means for removably securing the other end of said bars to the rear surface of the vehicle body.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 71 words
An air flow deflector as defined in claim 4, wherein said means for removably securing the other end of said bars to the back of the vehicle body includes a rubber strap having one end secured to each other end of said bars; a vertical secured secured to the other end of said rubber straps and means for removably attaching said vertical post to the rear surface of the vehicle body.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 46 words
An air flow deflector as defined in claim 5, wherein said other end of said bars is pivotally secured to said plate adjacent its other longitudinal edge portion and said one end of said bars is removably secured to the plate adjacent its one longitudinal portion.
