Abstract

Abstract HIGH POWER GAS LASER Abstract A region is provided for maintaining a glow dis- charge in a flowing laser gas mixture. The gas laser apparatus includes an arc plasma source for providing a plasma gas stream which is rich in electrons and/or metastables. The plasma gas is other than the laser gas, and the plasma stream assists the glow discharge such that a non-arcing glow discharge can be established in the glow discharge region. -1-

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 13
Claim 1
Independent Claim 88 words
The embodiments of this invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows: 1. A gas laser apparatus comprising: a region for maintaining a glow discharge in a flowing laser gas mixture; preionization means for providing a plasma stream of a carrier gas directed in line into the flow of said laser gas mixture; means for maintaining a glow discharge within said glow discharge region; and means for stimulating the emission of a coherent beam of radiation from said flowing laser gas mixture.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 30 words
A gas laser apparatus in accordance with claim 1 in which said region for maintaining said glow discharge includes at least one cathode region and at least one anode region.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 49 words
A gas laser apparatus in accordance with claim 2 in which said region for maintaining said glow discharge is adapted to receive a flowing laser gas mixture of at least 30 torr pressure having a relatively high mass flow as compared to the mass flow of said plasma stream.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 32 words
A gas laser apparatus in accordance with claim 3 in which said preionization means comprises an arc plasma source which is in intimate relation with said region for maintaining said glow discharge.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 26 words
A gas laser apparatus in accordance with claim 4 including a plurality of said arc plasma sources for increasing the output of said glow discharge. -11-
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 23 words
A gas laser apparatus in accordance with claim 4 in which said arc plasma source is in intimate relation with said cathode region.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 24 words
A gas laser apparatus in accordance with claim 4 in which said arc plasma source comprises an arc cathode for energizing a carrier gas.
Claim 8
Independent Claim 76 words
A method for producing a non-arcing glow dis- charge in a glow discharge region, which comprises the steps of: a) establishing a high pressure, high mass flow of a laser gas mixture through said glow discharge region, b) establishing at least one relatively low mass flow of a carrier gas plasma stream having metastable energy states, and c) communicating said plasma stream into said laser discharge region such that said plasma stream assists said glow discharge.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 31 words
A method in accordance with claim 8 which in- cludes providing an electric field within said glow dis- charge region through the use of a cathode region and an anode region.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 18 words
A method in accordance with claim 9 which includes communicating said plasma stream into said cathode region. -12-
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 31 words
A method in accordance with claim 10 in which the flow rate of said laser gas mixture is about fifty times as great as the flow rate of said plasma stream.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 15 words
A method in accordance with claim 10 in which said laser gas mixture includes CO2,
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 24 words
A method in accordance with claim 12 in which said laser gas mixture is maintained at a pressure of at least 30 torr. -13-
