Abstract

Abstract ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A tree felling device having a clamp for the tree trunk and a chain saw pivotably mounted relative to the clamp for sawing the trunk. In addition, a shearing blade is pivotably mounted to cut oppositely to the saw blade. With this arrangement, the chain saw is not required to cut completely through the trunk, since the final portion of the cut can be made by the shear blade, and the saw is thus protected from extreme forces which would otherwise act upon it in the final cutting stages.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 8
Claim 1
Independent Claim 241 words
A tree-felling unit comprising a substantially U-shaped stand with a tree receiving space; at least one clamping means mounted in said stand for clamping the stand against a tree received in said space and to be felled; a saw chain means supported by said stand for operative movement into said space to perform an incomplete saw through of such tree; a shearing means supported by the stand at sub-stantially the same level as the saw chain means for a shear-ing movement substantially in an opposed direction to that of the operative movement of the saw chain means, said saw chain means being mounted for operative movement from a protective position within said stand into the tree-receiving space in an opposed direction to that of the movement for applying the clamping means against the tree to be felled, said shearing means, the shearing movement of which is substantially opposed to the operative movement of said sawn chain means, being movable, at least with its cutting edge, all the way into the bottom plane of the tree-receiving space of the stand thereby making it possible for said shearing means also to effect a direct cutting of a tree having a diameter smaller than a predetermined diameter, besides the final separation of a tree incompletely sawn through by said saw chain means; and independent power means to effect the different movements of said clamping means, said saw chain means and said shearing means, respectively.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 241 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 39 words
A tree-felling unit as defined in claim 1, further comprising a stop means on the shearing means stopping the operative movement of the saw chain means in a position before a tree to be felled has been sawn through.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 36 words
A tree-felling unit as defined in claim 1, wherein said shearing means comprises a knife blade supported by an arm means and having a width and depth dimension at least corresponding to said predetermined tree diameter.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 105 words
A tree-felling unit according to claim 1, wherein said clamping and shearing means are operable indivi-dually each by one of said power means, which power means is in the form of a hydraulic cylinder, said hydraulic cylinder for operating the shearing means being provided with means to stop inwardly-directed movement of said shearing means in response to existence of a predetermined, relatively low, counter-pressure on said shearing means and to restart said movement of the shearing means when the saw chain has been returned to its protective position, thereby bringing said shearing means into position to cut off the remaining part of such tree trunk.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 64 words
A tree-felling unit according to claim 1, further comprising means sensing the diameter dimension of a tree to be felled, to start the operative movement of the saw chain means when sensing a tree having a diameter greater than said predetermined diameter and to start the cutting movement of the shearing device when sensing a tree having a diameter smaller than said predetermined diameter.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 48 words
A tree-felling unit according to claim 1, wherein said power means for said saw chain means comprises a hydraulic cylinder connected to a hollow shaft supporting a saw chain guide bar, and within which an axis driven by a drive motor is provided for operating the saw chain.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 30 words
A tree-felling unit according to claim 6, further characterized in that the clamping and shearing means are provided for pivotal movement about said axis supporting the saw chain guide bar.
