Abstract

Abstract Abstract of the Disclosure This invention relates to an apparatus for reverse osmosis comprising an elongate hollow pressure member and a membrane unit positioned within, but at least partly spaced from, the pressure member, the membrane unit comprising an elongate hollow flow layer each of the longitudinal surfaces of which flow layer is covered by a semi-permeable membrane, each of the end surfaces of the flow layer being covered with impermeable material or being sealed by contacting the pressure member, the apparatus also comprising means for introducing the fluid to be treated and means for discharg-ing the permeate and the concentrate produced.

Claim 3
Dependent Claim 34 words
Apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein the pressure member is a pressure tube, the ends of the tube being closed except where they are provided with means for introducing or withdrawing a fluid.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 14 words
Apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein the elongate hollow flow member is tubular.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 18 words
Apparatus as claimed in claim 2, wherein the pressure tube and/or the flow member is circular in cross-section.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 22 words
Apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein the entire outer longi-tudinal surface of the membrane unit is spaced from the pressure member.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 21 words
Apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein a layer of paper is pro-vided between the flow layer and each semi-permeable membrane.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 13 words
Apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein the flow layer comprises a fleece.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 13 words
Apparatus as claimed in claim 7, wherein the fleece is a polyester fleece.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 14 words
Apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein the flow layer comprises a sintered tube.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 12 words
Apparatus as claimed in claim 9, wherein the sintered tube com-prises polyethylene.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 16 words
Apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein the flow layer comprises at least one drainage tube.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 35 words
Apparatus as claimed in claim 11, wherein the drainage tube is provided with one or more channels, each of the channels either being helical or being parallel to the longitudinal axis of the drainage tube.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 13 words
Apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein each semi-permeable mem-brane comprises cellulose acetate.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim 18 words
Apparatus as claimed in claim 1, which comprises a plurality of membrane units within a single pressure member.
Claim 16
Dependent Claim 18 words
Apparatus as claimed in claim 14, wherein a plurality of membrane units are arranged coaxially one within another.
Claim 17
Dependent Claim 23 words
Apparatus as claimed in claim 14, which also comprises at least one partition for dividing the pressure member into a plurality of chambers.
Claim 18
Dependent Claim 55 words
Apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein the means for introducing the fluid to be treated and the means for discharging the permeate and the concentrate are so arranged that the fluid in the interior of a given mem-brane unit flows in the opposite direction to the fluid flowing past the exterior of that unit.
Claim 19
Dependent Claim 111 words
Apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein the means for introducing the fluid to be treated, the means for discharging the concentrate produced, and the means for discharging from the flow layer the permeate produced, and the impermeable material or the seals are so arranged that the fluid to be treated flows in an axial direction on a counter-current basis into the space(s) bounded by the membrane unit(s) and, after having travelled the length of the membrane unit, is reversed at the end of the membrane unit and flows in the opposite and axial direction into the space between the pressure member and the exterior of the or each membrane unit.
