Abstract

Abstract Abstract of the Disclosure N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine is produced by the re-duction of a carbonylaldiminomethanephosphonate. The carbonyl-aldiminomethanephosphonate is produced by the reaction of glyoxal or glyoxylic acid or its esters with aminomethyl-phosphonic acid esters. The N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine produced is useful as a post-emergent herbicide.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim 67 words
A process for the production of N-(phosphono-methyl)glycine compounds of the formula wherein X and Y are independently hydrogen or lower alkyl and Z is hydrogen or lower alkoxyl which comprises contacting a carbonylaldiminomethanephosphonic acid compound of the formula wherein X, Y and Z are as above defined with hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst whereby said carbonyl-iminomethanephosphonic acid compound is reduced to said N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine compound.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 67 words
A process for the production of N-(phosphono-methyl)glycine compounds of the formula wherein X and Y are independently hydrogen or lower alkyl and Z is hydrogen or lower alkoxyl which comprises contacting a carbonylaldiminomethanephosphonic acid compound of the formula wherein X, Y and Z are as above defined with hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst whereby said carbonyl-iminomethanephosphonic acid compound is reduced to said N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine compound.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 14 words
A process as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the reaction is conducted under pressure.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 17 words
A process as claimed in Claim 2 wherein the hydrogen pressure is from 1 to 100 atmospheres.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 17 words
A process as claimed in Claim 3 wherein the hydrogen pressure is from 1 to 10 atmospheres.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 21 words
A process as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the hydrogenation catalyst is Raney nickel, Raney cobalt, platinum, palladium, rhodium or iridium.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 13 words
A process as claimed in Claim 5 wherein the hydrogenation catalyst is palladium.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 17 words
A process as claimed in Claim 6 wherein the carbonylaldiminomethanephosphonic acid compound is a lower alkoxyl ester.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 15 words
A process as claimed in Claim 7 wherein the hydrogenation product is hydrolyzed to N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 14 words
A process as claimed in Claim 7 wherein the carbonylaldiminomethanephosphonic acid compound is diethylcarbo-n-butoxyaldiminomethanephosphonate.
