Abstract

Abstract The desk includes a conveyor belt moving purchases towards a digital bar code reader. The belt carries purchases through a narrow gap so that they are moved close to the reader, the articles having been manually arranged so that the code bars are vertical in front of the reader. If a code is not correctly read from an item, then the belt may be reversed so that the item passes through again. - Reading is initiated as the presence of an item is detected on arrival, and terminated as the passage of the article is detected on leaving the reader. The spacing between articles and detectors is chosen to allow successful handling of successive items.
