Timber framed doors with a cellular core enclosed by moulded panels - to suppress splitting or warping by humidity variations
Abstract
Abstract Doors, pref. panelled, are made by covering a peripheral timber frame opt. having ancillary crossbars with compression moulded panels having an external appearance and grain resembling timber and an internal surface textured to key with an adhesive interface on the timber frame and with a cellular resin filling the frame cavity. The surface panels pref. overlap the edges of the timber frame. For mfr. of doors having a timber appearance but not susceptible to warping or superficial splitting due to variation in atmospheric humidity. - Pref. the panels are moulded from fibre reinforced polyester resin and are 1.27-3.05mm thick. Pref. the core is filled with rigid polyurethane foam of density 12.8-56.1 kg/m3. The timber frame may be of soft wood such as pine and the internal surfaces of the moulded panels pref. feature narrow ribs which are impressed into the surface of the timber to inhibit lateral displacement. Transverse ribs may be incorporated to engage timber cross members. - Typically the superficial moulded grain is 0.076-0.228 mm deep and the internal surfaces have a regular fine cross-ribbed texture 0.076-0.127mm deep, to enhance adhesion between the moulded covers and the filled core.
